It’s easy to get innundated with “bad” news. Stories of shocking bad behavior, tragic events, and sad circumstance are all over the news and social media. I only watch the news once or twice a week. It’s about all I can handle. I tend to gravitate to the personal interest stories that showcase the better side of human nature. The movie “McFarland, USA” is one of those.

This Disney film is based on the true story of cross-country Coach Jim White (played by Kevin Costner) and his challenge to build an exceptional team at the Latino high school in McFarland, CA. Yes, a high school with a prison directly across the street for convenience? The irony isn’t lost on the teachers at this underfunded, ignored school. Beyond his struggle to help this group of young men find themselves in a world that doesn’t have any regard for their migrant worker families, Coach White has his own personal challenges to overcome. As a husband, father, teacher, coach, and neighbor, he strives to make the best decisions he can, just like the rest of us. Trying to fit into a very different community and to understand their traditions and culture is a big obstacle for “Blanco”, as his team members call him, and there are several opportunities in this movie for him to prove himself.

This is a heartwarming story that has you cheering for success as you follow the struggles of several of the characters. Everyone in this movie has things to “unlearn” about social stereotypes and judging others. Learning about each other as individuals and focusing on building each other up instead of tearing them down is key. The fact that this film is based on the lives of real people is not lost.

Champions truly can come from anywhere….even McFarland, USA. You can get your copy on Disney Blu-ray Combo Pack, Disney Movies Anywhere and Digital HD June 2nd!

“In the tradition of Disney sports movies comes “McFarland, USA” based on a true story of underdogs triumphing over tremendous obstacles. This heartwarming drama follows novice runners who strive to build a cross-country team under Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) in their predominantly Latino high school. Everyone has a lot to learn about each other, but when Coach realizes the boys’ exceptional running ability, things change. Beyond their talent, it’s the power of family, commitment to each other and work ethic that transform them into champions — helping them achieve their own American dream. ” ~Disney
